Three of the dozen-or-so shots made for a documentary about the life of the famous preacher C. H. Spurgeon. Falling CGI snow was added to live-action footage, some of which required the shots to be camera tracked and masked. Much of the snow was rendered out in foreground, midground and background layers, and then composited with the footage so that the snow appeared to be falling behind objects on screen as well as in front of them. For the walking shot above, a simple model was placed and animated in front of the actor in the Maya scene so that the snowflakes would not only fall behind him, but also hit him and bounce off, breaking into smaller pieces. All work was done in Maya with compositing in After Effects.
